Biography:

Pilling, a South African native, discovered her passion for art during her school days in Pietermaritzburg. Initially drawn to graphic design, she soon realized that her heart truly belonged to the creative freedom that fine art offered. While working as an accountant, she began her artistic journey part-time under the mentorship of Merle du Bois and exhibited her work at an artists' gallery in Durban. Later on, Pilling relocated to Johannesburg, where she continued to nurture her artistic talents under the guidance of Dee Venter at the Sandton Field and Study Centre. She furthered her artistic development by joining Hazel Thompson in Bryanston and honing her skills with palette knives and oil paints under the tutelage of Sue Kemp in George. Pilling also ventured into sculpture, exploring this medium with Rosenclaire. In mid-2011, she became a part of Filbert and Chisel, collaborating with Michelle Kriek. During this time, she focused on referencing the techniques of the Old Masters in her paintings and enhancing her drawing skills. Pilling's art career has seen her representation by the Tugwell and Makiwa Galleries, and currently, she offers her work privately through her website, at exhibitions, and through commissions.

Artist's Statement:

She meticulously selects the finest canvases and paints, adhering to time-honored methods of priming and layering to achieve her desired results. Her fascination lies in the interplay and fusion of colors to create a profound emotional impact on the viewer, a passion that is strongly influenced by the vibrant works of prominent South African artist Irma Stern. She constantly strives to elevate her craft through interactions with fellow artists, studying their work, reading about their techniques, and expanding her knowledge of various artistic approaches.

What Inspires Allison About Art?
"When I lift my paintbrush and make a mark on a canvas, it fills me with excitement. To be blessed with an ability to create something which never existed before. To capture a scene before my eyes. To get the right colour, tone, feeling, light and produce a painting, that someone will love and want to own is inspiring and rewarding to me as an artist."
